![]() ![]() After the events of the " Sinestro Corps War", Kyle returned to his original role as a Green Lantern officer, along with a promotion to Honor Guard Illustres of the Corps. įollowing Jordan's return to Green Lantern status in the 2004–2005 limited series Green Lantern: Rebirth, and the 2005 crossover storyline " Infinite Crisis", Kyle returned to his alias of Ion. ![]() During this period he was also briefly known as Ion. ![]() He was DC's star Green Lantern into the mid-2000s. 3, #48 (1994), as part of the " Emerald Twilight" storyline, in which DC Comics replaced Green Lantern Hal Jordan with Kyle, who was the sole Green Lantern for years until the late 1990s. Publication history Ĭreated by writer Ron Marz and artist Darryl Banks, and named after a character from James Cameron's film The Terminator, Kyle Rayner first appeared in Green Lantern vol. In 2013, Kyle Rayner was placed 14th on IGN's list of the "Top 25 Heroes of DC Comics". The character is depicted as being associated with the Green Lantern Corps, an extraterrestrial police force of which he has been a member. Kyle Rayner ( / ˈ r eɪ n ər/), one of the characters known as Green Lantern, is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. 3) #48 (January 1994)Įmerald Knight, Green Lantern, White Lantern, Ion, Oblivion, Life-Equation, Jade Dragon, Torch-Bearer, Parallax However, things are obviously not as simple as they should be.Art by Darryl Banks, Kevin Nowlan (inker), and Matt Hollingsworth (colorist) This was also done by Parallax as an act of penance before he sacrificed himself to save the Earth in the Final Night crossover. Notably, the issue also draws attention to Green Arrow's resurrection in the Post-Crisis DC Universe, with Brainiac 5 noticing during scans that Ollie's body was reconstructed at some point. Parallax being somehow tied to the Great Disaster would be fitting given his history, and pitting him against his former best friend once again could bring their tragic connection back into the spotlight. Parallax's power levels make him a force to be reckoned with, and his desire to tamper with time and space becomes more notable when other power players across the DC Multiverse (particularly Amanda Waller) are attempting to gain their own level of control over creation. His presence is a bad portent for Hal Jordan, who is currently back on Earth with Killowog in recent issues of Green Lantern. Parallax's return comes at an interesting time for the DC Universe. Parallax seems keenly aware of that history, even making a joke to Ollie in Green Arrow #3 about how Ollie shouldn't repeat their last meeting by shooting him. It was his former best friend Green Arrow who stopped him, wounding him at a crucial moment. This new villain was the chief architect of many dangerous schemes, the most impactful being Zero Hour, in which he almost completely eliminated the DC timeline. Slaughtering his way through much of their ranks and ultimately destroying the Central Power Battery, Jordan stole the power for himself and became the villainous Parallax. In the aftermath of his hometown, Coast City, being wiped out by Cyborg-Superman, a grieving Hal Jordan lashed out at the universe and turned on the Green Lantern Corps. Parallax was introduced in the "Emerald Twilight" storyline from Green Lantern #48-50 (by Ron Marz, Bill Willingham, Fred Haynes, Darryl Banks, Romeo Tanghal, Robert Campanella, Dennis Cramer, Albert DeGuizman, and Steve Mattson). It's a big reveal, as Parallax is a very dangerous (and controversial) DC villain, with a loaded history between him and Green Arrow. Specifically, it's the version of the fear entity when it took control of Hal Jordan. Ollie is specifically pulled from away from the team to meet who's using the powers - and immediately draws his bow upon seeing Parallax. When Lian convinces Ollie to fight to reunite their family, the Legion is attacked by a Green Lantern - which should be impossible, as the intergalactic peacekeepers are more or less extinct by the 31st century. ![]()
